Man, it's cooking out there today. 41 hot degrees in fact. So, yes I know, I haven't been here in ages. I wanted to leave up the Anytime Fitness vids for a while, as that entire project really gobbled up a big piece of my life, and time. Well in retrospect, that was now 7 months ago, and I'm pretty stoked to say that I still go to the gym every day. I'm weighing in at around 171 lbs, and feeling good about life in general. I don't want to talk about myself anymore than I have to, but I can't tell you how amazing it feels to walk out of the gym each day knowing I can eat what I want when I get home that night. No, I don't eat garbage, and I still lay off of the beer, but I also get to eat good carbs, and enjoy larger portions of the good things I already eat. I'm also super excited about our garden. Karlie and I have a beautiful large vegetable garden in our back yard which we eat from almost every evening. It makes me love the summer time so much more.

In other music news, I have a couple of irons in the fire, and will be happy to give some samples when I'm ready to do so. I'm sorry I've neglected this blog for so long. Life has been tough this week as my Gramma (yes, Gramma) passed away, and my family has been dealing with the loss of such a wonderful person. We'll pull through like we always do. Thank you for your kind words. All for now. Peace to the world.

Well, what can I say? This has been the best experience of my entire life. I've now completed 16 Weeks with Andre at Anytime Fitness, and I feel like a new man. We both agreed we'd throw this before and after shot up for now while we edit and produce the final installment in my video series, but as you can see, the program truly works. Expect to see the new video by the end of the week. Andre and Anytime Fitness changed my life, and I will forever be in debt for all they have done for me.

If you've been following this blog, and my progress, then you know all about my 16 Week Challenge with ANYTIME FITNESS. I'm proud to say that today was my final session within week # 16! My good friends Andre, Brian and I are in the midst of working on our final wrap up video that will include before and after photos, and some more details on how this has changed my life. Thank you for being patient, as I get emails everyday asking where this final video is. We simply wanted to have the most dramatic evidence possible, and that means a couple more weeks of hitting the gym hard. A new me is coming soon.

Time For A Change.

So with the New Year finally here, I've decided it's time to make a few changes in my life. Yes, I know a lot of people do the whole resolution thing, but this is something that I've been thinking about for a really long time. This past year my wife and I became vegetarian. It was a conscience choice on our part to really watch what we were eating, and to do more research on the things we put in our body. That includes mass manufacturing of food, and the hormones and chemicals that are found in so many of the foods we eat today.

I can honestly say that we eat fresh, healthy organic food every day, and I've never felt better about my diet. I still get a lot of protein from leafy greens, beans, soy products and nuts. I also take a lot of amazing vitamins that I never even knew about before this. Now, although I'm treating my body great from the inside, I still have love handles, a gut, and feel like I need a change on the outside.

I, like most of my friends, enjoy relaxing on the couch with a cold beer or 7. Over the holidays, I found myself over eating, and drinking a lot of beer and wine. Who doesn't right? Well, it's time for a change, and I'm really pumped to announce that I'm taking this to a whole new level. Starting Monday, January 10th, I'll be taking the 16 Week Challenge from Anytime Fitness. I'll be working with trainer Andre Avigdor 3 times a week, for a total of 16 weeks in order to reach my personal goals. I'm not looking to bulk up and become a body builder by any means. My goals are to get into a program that I can utilize after these sessions are done, and maintain a healthy, slim look. I simply want to lose the flab, and tone my body so I look and feel like I do on the inside.

The cool part about the journey is that my friend Brian Hamilton, who's done work with me on The Secret Stash sessions, will be filming my progress every week, so we can upload the videos right here on my blog. This way, not only will you see how the program works, but it will allow you to see inside Anytime Fitness' facility, and hopefully get you inspired to get into shape too. Don't get me wrong people... I love to party. I'm a late night guy with a passion for cold beer, pizza, and loud music, but I honestly feel that I can have both. I turned 30 last May, and I'm not getting any younger. I just feel that if I don't get into a routine now, it could mean a flabby belly for life. I like going on vacation and not being embarassed to take off my shirt. I haven't been able to do that in a long time, so why not now?

Some Highlights....

With the ball about to drop, I figured one of the last posts of the month should be a wrap up on the music of the past year. I've always done a Top 10 list of the records I truly loved, but this year was a strange one for me musically. In the past 2 years there was a real stand out that took the top spot, but this year was more of a collection of really decent albums, without a mind blower. Some of my friends released some amazing music, and I got to take in some amazing concerts too. Before counting down the list, I wanted to share some special moments of 2010...

- This year marked my first Anniversary! I've offically been married to the perfect woman for well over 365 days, and I've never been more happy to introduce her as my "wife." That's a great feeling.

- In September of this year, I said goodbye to my band mates in The Champion Heartache. After 3 years of making music with some dear friends, it was tough to call an end to it all, but I feel we had some amazing times, made some great songs and released 2 albums that I'm very proud of.

- A month or so ago, we travelled to New York City to see Guided By Voices play for the last time. It was an awesome concert, but the trip itself was one I'll never forget. Chanting "G-B-V" with 3000 other fans is a rush that keeps me coming back time and time again.

- 2010 also marked the beginning of my run as host of the Thursday Open Stage at The Bittmore in Courtice. I've met some amazing musicians and found myself a cozy spot with great staff. I truly hope it continues well into the new year. I can't thank the players enough. Without you, it really wouldn't be possible.

- Back in May, I turned 30 years old. To celebrate, Karlie and I jumped out of a plane! We went skydiving for the first time, and I have to say that I'm really proud of both of us. Totally crazy, and an event I'll remember for the rest of my life.

- A few months ago, my friend Brian Hamilton and I began to work on a video blog called "The Secret Stash." We've only done a few episodes, but it's been really great to creatively work with not only another person, but another medium altogether. I've been really proud to promote and highlight some amazing performers, and I know it can only go up from here. Check it out here!

- Sadly, this year we had to say goodbye to some of our family as well. Our beloved Uncle Igors passed away suddenly this spring, and we made the trip to Vancouver to be with our family, and say our goodbye. It was very difficult, but I was so proud to sit side by side with my in laws and share in their sorrow. My Grandmother's husband John also passed away earlier this year, and directly afterwards it looked as though we were going to have to say goodbye to her too. She really pulled through a sickness that almost took her life, and I'm happy to say we spent her 87th birthday with her just 2 weeks ago. Wow. And if you read this blog, you know that just 3 weeks ago, our beloved cat Charlie was taken from us when a speeding driver hit her and never looked back. I still think of her each day, and feel some solice in knowing we won't have to worry about her again. xo.

- On a lighter note, this past spring I made my first ever appearance on TV! Yes, it was local cable, but I've never been so nervous in my life. The staff of Daytime at Rogers Television made me feel very welcome and relaxed, and I'm happy to say I survived....barely.

- Finally, this year marked my nephew's first Birthday! It's so amazing to watch my sister blossum into an amazing and loving Mother. I really feel a special connection with both her and the little dude. He's so full of life and wonder, and I'm really proud to be an Uncle to such a special boy.

The Secret Stash

That's a shot of my friend Brian and I, on location at our friend Anthony's house. We were shooting a session for our new video series called "The Secret Stash." Right now, we've completed 3 separate episodes, but we're still in the process of setting up a proper site. I thought since I've had some tough luck in the past week or so, it'd be cool to come here and spread some positive vibes and get you all to check it out. The focus of the series is to highlight local musicians and give them the proper attention they deserve. We have a long list of peformers that we will feature in upcoming episodes, but for now, you can watch the first few and let us know what you think. Being a local DJ, it's tough for me to endorse or spin music from local artists on the airwaves, but by doing these sessions, I can promote the videos here, and show you all what wonderful and creative friends I have. R.I.P Charlie...

With a heavy heart, I'm sad to announce the passing of our beloved Charlie, better known as "Char Char." Last night I got a frantic phone call from Karlie saying someone hit her with their car, and kept going. We rushed her to the Animal Hospital where were initially told she had a good chance, but after looking at her x-rays, it was time to say goodbye. She was such a beautiful spirit, and always woke me up by brushing her little face against mine to remind me it's time to get up. I'll never forget you Char. Thank you for the short, but precious time we had together.

NYC part 2...

So after waking up with quite the hangover from Sunday night's show, we decided we should hit the town and take in some culture. This started with a cab ride to the Guggenheim. Upon arrival, it was a rainy, windy day, and we were forced to wait in line for about 20 mins. We made the best of it by buying umbrellas from a vendor, and laughed the whole time. Inside the museum, we were given headsets complete with a audio tour guide for most pieces at the exhibit. I was three feet from a Picasso, and seeing the actual brush strokes on that canvas truly is an inspiring feeling. Karlie and I agreed we should look into making our own art, and getting more involved with our artistic side. Like I said, we really were inspired.

After that adventure, we made our way to a really great vegan restaurant called The Organic Grill.
It was a tiny little spot very reminiscent of The Velvet Elvis (RIP) I tried some organic beer, and had an awesome sandwich with home fries. No big deal, but great to eat healthy and see how other vegetarians stick together to create a unique dining experience. After we ate, we made our way back to the condo, as Tash and Alan had tickets for Letterman, and I needed a nap. Poor baby. After the nap, it was time to get another case of beer and hang out in the condo. Apparently Letterman was awesome, and everyone seemed to be in great spirits. We had the Ipod blasting Wu Tang Clan, and Alan and I decided we knew every song word for word, so we drunkenly rapped and hung out on the fire escape, soaking in the city. By the time 11:00 pm hit, we thought we'd better go eat something, so we found a pub up the street, ordered appetizers and a glass of red. We laughed and talked about the trip, football, and other random drunken ramblings before heading back out to time square for an impromptu photo shoot. The city was of course buzzing, and walking around and looking at the action was such a great and overwhelming feeling. I really love it there, but I'm pretty damn sure I couldn't afford to live there mentally, or financially.

The day we left, we spent some significant time in Central Park. We started out by visiting The Dakota which is of course where John Lennon was killed. It was very surreal and eerie to stand next to the gate. I talked to the doorman there, and he pointed out to me where everything happened. For some reason it kind of choked me up. We continued across the street where John's memorial is in Central Park. It's called Strawberry Fields and although it's very simple in design, it speaks to me in such a way that I can only describe as peaceful. For someone who only wanted love and peace, it really saddens me to think of him not being here anymore. New York City truly is John Lennon. We left there, and got coffee and soaked in the sights. Mind you, it's tough to see all of an 800 acre park, but we hit some significant spots including this.

Overall, this trip was just awesome. The flight back home was simple, and I highly recommend flying Jetblue. Cozy, spacious, and sitcoms galore.

Back to my so-called normal life for now. I love New York.

Just Imagine.

Just imagine. Seeing my favourite band in my favourite city in the world. What a whirlwind this past week has been. I only get a limited amount of time off each year, so when I had the chance to see Guided By Voices in New York City, I just had to make it happen. Our trip started by driving to Hamilton to pick up our other travellers, Natasha and Alan. After trying to sleep, we awoke for 7am and made the trek to Buffalo, where we flew to JFK Airport. We arranged to rent a condo in the heart of Manhatten, instead of renting a hotel for twice the cost. It really was within blocks of Times Square and at the heart of the entertainment district. The day we arrived, we checked into our condo, only to find the cleaning lady still there around 3pm. We shrugged it off, and headed out to get pizza, and see the surrounding area. Within minutes we found ourselves looking at the larger than life billboards in the centre of Times Square. I had been here ten years earlier, but it was still pretty amazing to look up and see Puff Daddy looking down at you from the side of a building. After walking for a while, we came across what was certain to be our saviour for the day, if not the entire trip. Let me introduce you to 2 Bros. Pizza. This tiny spot is home to the $1.00 slice of pizza, and truly was the tastiest and cheapest slice I've ever had. I ordered 3 at a time on the Tuesday before we left, but upon first finding it, I had only spent a couple of bucks before finding myself full, and happy to have eaten a real NY tradition. These guys must be millionaires. Each time we walked by, there was a minimum of 30 people in line. Alan said that one morning when he went out to get breakfast, there were people lined up at 9am.

After eating, and seeing some sights, we decided to get beer, and head back to the condo for the pre-game ritual. Now let me explain something here. Natasha and Alan weren't coming to the concert, but my beautiful wife Karlie is the first person to accept and understand my passion for not just music and concerts, but this particular music, and this particular concert. Guided By Voices have easily been my favourite band for more than a decade. There has always been a small window of time before a GBV show that I consider one of the best feelings I've ever felt. Ice cold cheap beer, and lots of it, and a playlist on my Ipod of my favourite songs from the band I'm about to see. This ritual usually happens in a hotel room, and consists of Karlie getting ready, and me dancing around getting drunk enough to save money at the show, but sing my heart out throughout. After this show, I've seen them 15 times, and counting. What's cool about this lineup is that it's the original lineup from way back in the day.... well kind of. I won't go into detail, but let's say that this band has come in many different forms, with the exception of front man Robert Pollard. Now though I've seen them so many times, this one was special because the band was focused on the songs that made them popular so long ago. The setlist was comprised of the classic songs from the classic albums, and it was a beautiful feeling to have thousands of people around you singing note for note to the songs we all love so much. Chris Murphy of Sloan was there too. Hell, my friend from Toronto, Craig Laskey even made the trip to this show! By the way, you can thank Craig for bringing GBV to the Horseshoe for a double header back in July of 2002. Yes, I was at both shows. Anyhow, the band sounded amazing, and the crowd sang along note for note. The setlist was amazing, and the night flew by in a flash of rock n' roll perfection. In retrospect it makes me feel so lucky to have been at this show. There's been talk of more dates next year, but this was hands down the best of the tour and a show I'll never forget.

NYC, GBV... Here we come!

It's been a few days since my last rambling. I just wanted to pop by to say that as of tomorrow, I'm gone for a week. My wife and I plus her sister and bf are heading to New York City on Sunday for a few days. It's easily my fav city to visit, and we're seeing my fav band of all time, Guided By Voices. This is their last show on this tour, and they're playing with the "classic lineup" from back in the day. Expect tons of pictures and a review of the show in a week or so. I haven't seen them since 04', so this truly is rock'n'roll heaven for me.

Halloween Gigs and More!

Yes, that's me. I guess that was about 86' or so, when He-Man ruled my life. That's my Dad, the clown and my sister, the baby. Halloween has always been a huge deal to me. I guess it has something to do with the smell in the air this time of year, and perhaps the thought of ghostly spirits walking around in the night. It still sends chills up my spine a little. I have fond memories of my Mom ordering pizza while we got our costumes on, and my Dad would be cranking M.J's Thriller while adjusting the speed on the strobe light that would be directed at the front of our house. I usually knew what my costume would be around Sept.1st each year. To my recollection, they included, and not in any particular order....

He-Man, A Pirate, Zombie, Ninja, Gorilla, Freddy Krueger and The Terminator. Last year, I dressed up as a Butcher of humans. Yes, I have a strange affliction with this time of year, and I think I always will. We don't have kids yet, but it's stuff like Halloween that pushes me in that direction a little more each year. We already have our pumpkins ready, and I have a dead man sitting in a chair in my garage. Don't worry, I didn't kill him. He's just waiting to be sat on our front porch for Halloween night. I also usually hook up my P.A System in the windows upstairs, cranking scary sound effects so the whole neighbourhood knows how crazy I really am. Don't be scared kids! We have chocolate too!

Unknown Pleasures...

First of all, I want to say thanks to my good friend Dave at Warner. He's always had my back when it comes to helping with albums I've been waiting to hear, or concert tickets etc. Yesterday I opened a package that came here to the studio, and to my surprise I was sent 2 Joy Division reissues on vinyl. It seems that both "Closer" and "Unknown Pleasures" have recieved the deluxe re-mastering treatment, and are being pressed for the first time in 10 years. When I got home last night, I raced down into my studio and threw these on while my wife made dinner. If you know these albums at all, you may think you know what to expect, but let me be the first to tell you that the mixes on these albums sound light years better then they ever have before. I'm now hearing more of Ian Curtis' vocals, and actual harmonies that I didn't know where even on tape...maybe they weren't before? Peter Hook's bass lines have never sounded so, well, hook-y, and the songs stand as strong today as they ever did in 1979. I urge you to grab both of these for your record collection.

I hope you enjoyed my Four Tet interview. I know it's kind of tough to understand what Kieran is saying because of his accent, and how fast he talks, but the show was really amazing, and I sincerely thank everyone involved with making that happen for me. It was really a night to remember.

Moving towards the end of this week, I'll have some Halloween related posting to do, as it's by far my favourite time of year, and I always like to compile a list of spooky music for my audience. Boo!

Hey there. I hope everyone had a great weekend. I've been holding off posting here in order to give readers of the blog time to watch our Xiu Xiu interview. I hope you enjoyed it, and that some of you even purchased some of their music. That's the goal here, to introduce you to some new music, and to help promote concerts, events, album releases and more. I'm really excited to announce that my friend Brian and I have begun filming for our new site. This past weekend we spent some time with local artist Dan Brooks, and shot a feature performance and interview with him from my home studio. Expect to see the feature piece on our new blog within the next couple of weeks.

Lot's of amazing shows are happening around Toronto this week. I'm also very excited to announce my next audio interview with Four Tet. Kieran Hebden is the one man band behind this project, and it looks like he'll be calling me on Wednesday to talk about his tour, and the amazing electronic album he put out earlier this year. It's called "There Is Love In You" and it's easily one of my favorite releases of the year. He's coming to the Mod Club on Wednesday, so expect to hear the feature piece right here by Friday. No, it's not just rock n' roll, but it's really tasty and dancey, and I'm very excited to talk with him.

Tomorrow night, Toronto plays host to a couple amazing gigs. Atlanta area band Deerhunter are in town at The Opera House. They've just released a beautiful disc titled "Halcyon Digest" and I urge you to pick it up. I've already witnessed their live act a few months back when they opened for Spoon at the Sound Academy, and I need to watch my budget as far as shows go these days. That same night, L.A band Local Natives play The Mod Club, and they're really amazing too, so it's a toss up. I've posted links at the bottom of this post, so you can judge for yourself.

This Thursday, the one and only Band Of Horses are in town for a sold out show at The Kool Haus. I've interviewed this band a couple of times, the first time way back in 2006 when they first played here at Lee's Palace. Ben Bridwell has become somewhat of a house hold name, and I urge everyone to go get their latest, "Infinite Arms." It's a real beauty, and must have for anyone who loves their rock southern fried. It has a few ballads in the tracklist too, and after one week with this one, I knew the songs' lyrics front to back. Our wedding song was actually Ben covering Gearge Harrison's "Your Love Is Forever." Go see this show if you can get your paws on some tickets.

Xiu Xiu is an art rock outfit from San Jose California. The sole member of this band, Jamie Stewart sat with me in the parking lot behind Lee's Palace before their gig with Deerhoof on October 3rd to talk about their new album. What a weekend. I have so many things to be thankful for, but after spending a weekend with my family, I'm reminded of just how lucky I am to have so many people around me that I care about. Friday night I got to lay low, as I had a live broadcast from the Pickering Markets early Saturday. That was a great way to start my weekend, as I met lots of listeners, and got to see some dear friends by the name of One Divided. They played an outdoor show as the sun was beaming and people were entering. I did a quick intro for them, and they sounded great. After that, I hopped in the Rock Cruiser, and headed home to try to help prep some amazing vegan stuffing with my talented wife, but I was ushered out of the kitchen because she clearly had things under control. Next stop was my in-laws. A beautiful meal was prepared without turkey! Yep, the whole fam took a step in a new direction by trying out some new recipes including vegetarion shepard's pie, stuffing, potatoes with mushroom gravy, and 3 different deserts. Absolutely amazing. That was a great time, but I couldn't help but wish that my Mom was around on this holiday. She doesn't live close to us right now, but Thanksgiving was always a big deal for us because she spent the majority of two solid days cooking a meal that would typically last 20 minutes. Miss you Ma! After dinner, it was back to our house for my sister in law's Birthday, where we were joined by our close friends Joanne, Monty, Cal and Claire. It was a pretty mellow night, comprised of lots of red wine, and great conversation.

Sunday was a lazy morning, but with such amazing autumn weather, we were delighted to be invited to my cousin Darryl's engagement party which took place on a beautiful lot just outside of town, complete with 4 picnic tables fully dressed and decked out in true Thanksgiving fashion. I don't see that side of my family often, so it was really great to hug all of the Holtbys. Congrats to Darryl and Larissa. After we got back home, I started a fire in our chiminea, and we sat around talking about how awesome family is, especially during the holidays. More wine, cold beer, and full stomach. Me likey.

Monday was a beautiful day to do just about anything outside. I was honored enough to have my father-in-law invite me to golf with him at his club. However, I felt more than embarrassed about quite possibly the worst round I've ever played. I couldn't hit the ball straight, if at all, and we were paired up with two other golfers who were amazing. This has me seriously thinking about hanging up the clubs for good. Certainly for the season. Fore indeed. After golf, it was off to my Dad's for another meal and get together with my step brother and his family, plus my sister Amy and her family. My nephew Nate is literally running at the tender age of 10 months. It's insane. Check it out here at my sister's blog. Each time I see him, I can't believe how fast he's growing. It reminds me how awesome it is to have kids in your life... just not my own, yet!

Saturday October 9th marks what would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday. I'm not about to ramble on about how much his music means to me, because it's quite obvious to anyone who listens to 94.9 The Rock, that most of us are pretty big fans of The Beatles. This weekend is more of a reflection as to what Lennon's music means to you, the listener. I don't have any close personal attachment to John because I'm just too young to really appreciate what he meant to my parents or the generation before me. I understand it, and I think his music is absolutely important and timeless, but it would be silly of me to talk about how I felt the day he died, simply because I don't remember it. At the time, I was just months old and couldnt' possibly comprehend what was happening, or why. Hell, I still don't. Yes, I know the story, and where and when this life was taken from us, but I still don't know why, and I don't think I ever will. John Lennon spoke a different language. One of life, love, peace and understanding, and his voice was heard on a completely different level. Long live the music of John Lennon.

In other blogging news, our interview with Xiu Xiu will be posted Monday. It looks like I have some other cool features coming up, but I want to nail down some details before I announce them here. What a weekend! Everything that I blogged about being excited for last friday, turned out to be way better than I ever imagined. I will have lots of updates, and a couple of interviews to post later this week, but what a rockin' weekend! To start things off, my wife Karlie and I joined her Mom, Dad and Sister to do the Farm Sanctuary Walk For Farm Animals. It was a really special event that made me feel a real sense of community along with other people who feel the same desire to inform the public on the cruelty of mass factory farming. It was inspirational to walk side by side with people who aren't afraid to stand up for something we believe in. I shot some video of it, and will post it shortly.

After the walk, we headed into Hamilton where Karlie's sister Natasha and her boyfriend live, where we were greeted with open arms, a few bottles of wine and a delicious meal. We were in town to see Women open for Liars. I had to duck out from dinner to go meet the band for an interview at the venue, which turned out to be one of the smallest clubs I've ever been to, and I loved it. Picture seeing one of your fav bands play in someone's living room. So intimate and cool. I interview 3 of the guys from Women in their tour van, and they were super friendly and funny, and made me feel very welcome. That audio interview is coming this week too. Lot's to do!

After waking up Sunday with a little bit of a "headache," I had to drive back to Courtice to drop Karlie off, and then head back downtown Toronto with my friend Brian, as we had yet another interview to tackle with Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu. They were in town with Deerhoof, and I was really excited to meet with him to discuss their latest album. The cool thing about this interview was that it's the first video interview I've ever done, and as it turns out, Brian and I are going to continue working together, and we're starting another video blog very soon, featuring local musicians, and of course, bands that we dig. Starting with an interview from Xiu Xiu is a pretty rad start if you ask me. Things are really starting to cook creatively, and it feels good to put my own band to rest, and start on something new to support other artists. We still have lots to figure out, but we'll have an official announcement soon!

Wrapping up the weekend, and after watching an amazing show at Lee's Palace, I got home and hopped on my Macbook to check out what was happening in the land of P4K. How could I forget? One of the finest labels on the planet, Matador Records, was streaming live video of their 21st Anniversary Bash in Vegas, and my favorite band of all time, Guided By Voices were headlining! Now, there's a two hour time difference from there to here, and what was supposed to be 11:30 Vegas time, turned out being about 3:30 am our time by the time they took the stage. I tried to keep up as best I could, but as you can imagine, I had a pretty busy weekend, and I ended up falling asleep after 4am. The entire festival featured Matador's finest, including Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Belle and Sebastian, Pavement, and so many more. I was really excited to see what GBV sounded like after getting back together for this tour, but more importantly because Kar and I are heading to see them in New York City next month for the final show on their reunion tour. They were a little rusty, and they look a few years older, but it sure is fun to know every single song in a 30 plus song setlist. That and the fact that NYC is the coolest place I've ever travelled has me very excited. Expect huge posts and reviews after that one!

In closing, I'll get my interviews up here as soon as I can, but I'm just thankful that I have such an amazing team around me who support all of this fantastic art. I love autumn, but weekends like the one I just had, make it that much better.

Nothing major to report, other than the fact that it's finally friday! My cold has somewhat disappeared, and I have an amazing weekend planned. Tonight, visiting family, and relaxing before waking up early tomorrow to participate in The Walk For Farm Animals with my lovely wife, and her family. This is something we believe in, as we've recently become vegetarians within the past year or so. We have many reasons to live our lives this way, but I simply disagree with mass factory farming, and feel this is something I'd love to support.

Saturday we head to Hamilton, as one of my favorite bands by the name of Women are opening for another great band, Liars at a small venue called "This Ain't Hollywood." I'm stoked because I get to interview the band, and then see a killer show in an intimate setting. Their new album is called "Public Strain" and it's getting rave reviews everywhere. It's weird, and noisy, but if you're up for something different, it's a must have. Expect to hear the feature right here early next week. Sunday brings another amazing show to Toronto. Xiu Xiu are playing with Deerhoof, two bands I've loved for a long time, and frontman Jamie Stewart has agreed to sit and chat with me about their new album titled "Dear God, I Hate Myself." It's epic, and very strange. I'm really looking forward to meeting him and seeing the show at Lee's Palace.

Nomination News!

The Beastie Boys have once again been nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Brooklyn based trio are among 14 nominees competing for induction into rock's pantheon. Artists become eligible for nomination after the 25th anniversary of their debut record. The "Sabotage" hitmakers didn't release their debut album until 1986, but did release a couple of singles in the early-1980s. Darlene Love, LL Cool J and Donna Summer are also nominees.

As much as I love the changing of the seasons, it usually brings along the commen cold too, which kicked me right in the butt on Sunday. This past weekend was a truly special one. As I've blogged in the past, my band The Champion Heartache, just released our second and final album. We celebrated with a CD Release party this past friday at Status Lounge in Oshawa. The club was not only very gracious to us and our guests, but the vibe was just beautiful. I've never had so many fans, friends and family in one room at one time. Our good friend Spyro at Sigma Sounds provided an amazing system for the band, and I really urge you to contact him if you have any needs for sound at shows. He's a class act.

This blog is really to be used for more radio chat, and music in general, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us in the past. Our new CD is available upon request, so drop me a line at matt@therock.fm and I'll personally drop one off to you.

As for new releases this week, I urge you to check out the new album by Deerhunter. It's called Halcyon Digest, and it's all I've been listening to for a few weeks now. Hey, I'm still a Leafs fan, but 5-0? Kind of a scary thought that we're right back where we started last season. Granted, we're trying out some new blood, and it's only pre-season, but I'm really tired of defending my love for this team to my co-workers around here. Telephantasm

So yesterday I mentioned that today is new release day. Although there's one "unearthed" track on Soundgarden's best of collection titled Telephantasm, it's done it's job as far as picking and choosing some of the band's finest moments of their career. I think if you're a fan of alternative rock, you probably have some sort of small connection or memory with this band. Some of us were in the Nirvana camp, or Pearl Jam and Sonic Youth etc, but I have one distinct memory of being in my friend Dave's basement during a party at 3am and someone popped in Badmotorfinger, argueably their best recording, if not one of the 90's in general.

The intro to Rusty Cage was absolutle blasting through the big JVC tower speakers, and it kind of freaked me out a little. It's one of those songs that makes you want to jump in an old muscle car and tear up the desert or something. It just grabbed me and kicked the shit out of my ears. It was love at first listen. After that, it was pretty easy to guess why a song like Jesus Christ Pose became the next track that I was glued to for months on end.

After that album, Superunknown was all over the airwaves with tracks like Spoonman, and of course the trippy video of Black Hole Sun, complete with melting faces, and little girls with their ice cream cone. Very weird indeed. I urge any one of you to turn up the volume on a track like Fell on Black Days, and not have the hair stick up on the back of your neck. Good memories indeed. Now comes the debate of whether or not a band like this should do the whole reunion tour deal. Sure, Lollapalooza is one thing, but would you buy an expensive ticket to watch Kim, Matt, Chris and Ben relive the 90's? Well, let's put it this way, if someone buys me a ticket, I'm in. If not, back to the cd player I go...

Well, it looks like I'm back at my blog again. Man, time flies. It's been a while since I last posted, but I'm going to try to sincerely keep at it this time, and provide our listeners with music info, and lots of ear and eye candy. Tonight is the annual Polaris Music Prize award ceremony. The short list includes a couple of really amazing records that have been on my Ipod for quite some time now. You can view it here.

One of those nominees is Dundas Ontario native Dan Snaith, a.k.a Caribou. His album "Andorra" won the 2008 prize, so I'd be very shocked if he took it again, but his latest album, SWIM is brilliant and it's one of my fav releases of the year. I took my wife and a few friends to see Caribou this past friday at The Phoenix and it was a really amazing show. It seemed to fly by too fast, but perhaps I was just too busy dancing and enjoying myself a little too much! Two days before the show, I had the chance to speak with Dan over the phone about the album and his nomination etc. He was really kind, and always an interesting guy to speak with. Tomorrow is new release day! Nothing really special on the list other than My Darkest Days, which I only mention because we spin their new single, "Porn Star Dancing." There's another cool album by TV on The Radio's guitar player and mastermind Dave Steik, under the name Maximum Balloon. Should be pretty cool.

Next week sees the new album by Neil Young called Le Noise, and the best of Soundgarden, called Telephantasm. Awful name, great band. Please tour soon!

The Champion Heartache Mixing New LP, Giving Away Debut Album

It’s been over a year since Oshawa’s The Champion Heartache self released their debut disc. The band is now in the mixing stage of their sophomore album, titled Indoor Voices, and to celebrate, they’re giving away their first album for free. “This is simply an effort to get more people to hear the first one. The new disc is about a month or so away, and we’d really like to get some friends excited for the new one. We just hope people haven’t forgotten about us.” Matt Holtby is the lead singer of the band, but claims the new album is strictly a collaborative effort. “This time, we just did a lot of jamming, and feel the next release is a true pop rock record. Lots of fun four minute rockers.”

The band will have a new song from Indoor Voices available within weeks, but in the meantime, download their self titled debut for free below.

Expect to see a string of spring tour dates to coincide with their release.

So, tomorrow tickets for the show of the year go on sale. It features Broken Social Scene, Band Of Horses, and the reunited Pavement! Since hearing of this show, I've been driving around listening to Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain and thinking back to why I started listening to this band in the first place. Not the lyrics, not the production, not the wanky guitar, but...the hooks. Between this, and Slanted and Enchanted, there more hooks than a tackle box (ZING!) Gotta love it.

Today the new Spoon album came out. It's absolutely great, and I urge you to get out and pick it up. I first caught these guys back in '01 opening for Guided By Voices, and I've been a huge fan ever since. They're on Conan tonight too.

This past weekend was great. On saturday, our drummer Craig stopped by, and we ended up listening to this album after killing a case of beer. It was great to just relax and chat about music other than our own.

Sunday we got back to working on the new Champion Heartache record. I'm finally getting excited, and have a good feeling that it's going to sound like I hoped it would. It's a much more upbeat record with only one slower tune on it. We now have 2 songs completely mixed, and shall continue to work away on the remaining tracks. Within the next month or so we'll be working on some new promo stuff like photos, artwork and a new website.

First Post In 3 Years?

Yes, it's true. For some strange reason, I've neglected this blog horribly, but stumbled across it in my "favorites" and I've been reading it at work for like, an hour now. God, I feel so old now. The majority of these posts seem so optimistic, and full of love towards people I hardly even know anymore. How time flies, and friends change.

I'm still playing music, and The Champion Heartache is currently mixing our second album which might see a release by early spring. At one point we were ready to press it on vinyl. Now we'll be lucky if it's available on casette. Times are tough financially, but our good friend Billy Blasko (who appears far too many times in previous postson this blog) is at the wheel once again, helping to mix and finish this record at a really great price.

There's nothing else really huge to talk about right now. Since my last post however, I've married Karlie, we bought a house, I have a home recording setup, and she owns a horse. Too funny. Last night was my first night back in a bar hosting an open stage at The Bittmore in Courtice. It was an awesome turnout and great to see so many familiar faces again. I haven't been playing much live, nor has the band. That picture up there is the last gig I played, just after Christmas. It was at Jay and Kerri King's garage, and featured Sunbear, Jonas Bonetta, and a surprise appearance from Blue Rodeo's Greg Kellor. Favorite show of the year, no joke.

Ok, I'm done for now. Just random typing and not much to say other than I hope everyone is doing well, and having a Happy New Year so far.

Awwww man, how I wish I was right back there. What an amazing long weekend we had in Wasaga. That pic is literally 10 minutes after unpacking and having our first of many shots of Litchi. Wonderful stuff by the way. Our drive took about 3.5 hours as the snow was the worst I've EVER driven in. Thank God I wasn't actually behind the wheel, as Brendan is the man and kept his cool as we prayed out loud in his VW. We couldn't even see 4 feet in front of us at times, but slow and steady gets shitfaced, and we made it alive. The order of things this weekend doesn't matter because we really had no intentions of a schedule, or working order of songs etc. We just wanted to get some ideas to tape, and have a blast doing it. It was really great to not feel the pressure of getting actual full songs done in time. We just cranked up the guitars and let Craig drum away. We ended up pulling an all nighter right through until saturday evening, then slept a few winks and got back it. Sunday was quite messy and blurry at that, but we had so much fun. I love these dudes so much, and we truly have a unique relationship when it comes to this music thing. It's like we share the same brain at times. Kyle would come up with one harmony, then Brendan and Sean would hop all over it and a song would be near completion before you knew it. I just sat back and laughed for most of the weekend. I think I might have added a bass line here and there, but that's about it. I just wanted to have fun....mission accomplished.

Hot Spot

I awoke to these images on my tv. Sometimes I wonder if someone upstairs is mocking me. Tonight we leave for the cottage to record some stuff for 3 days, and although this fire happened about 10 minutes away from our spot, I've been told we're just fine to head up. Just crazy timing I guess. I don't have much to report other than the fact that I've been looking forward to this for about a month. We always get serious tracking done, and with Brendan, Sean, Kyle and Craig, I know we'll return with at least 2 tracks done.

The weather is supposed to be just evil up north right now, so pray for me! If this is my last post ever, tell my family I love them, and that I went out rockin'! LOL. I'll be back monday with pictures, and hopefully a post with new songs.

A Picture Says...

Sometimes I'm sitting around the house, and I need to get out and just walk around. Usually this takes me to Chapters, where I grab a coffee and walk around looking at books, and hang out in the music section. Last week I bought my new copies of Magnet, Under The Radar and Harp. Well last night, I did just that and although I already have my monthly mags, I was so surprised to see the new Autumn deWilde book, titled Elliott Smith. I knew it was out, but just last week I was there and looked for it, and none were in stock. Yes, I bought it. Yes I read the entire thing in one sitting. I originally knew there was some writing in it, but the majority of the book is just big beautiful photos of Elliott. However, there are a ton of really hilaious stories told by those closest to him, including Beck, Chris Walla, Ben Gibbard, and people who actually recorded music with him. I sat on the couch for literally 2 hours and read it front to back, taking time to stare at each picture. Lots of them I had never even seen before, which had me in tears at times. It's truly a must have for any fan.

There's my beautiful girl. Karlie has really shown me some amazing things in our 5 years together, but lately she's really gotten back into being around horses. This is something I've never been into, but because of her love of riding and taking care of her friends horses, I've really become a lover of these amazing creatures. On saturday we travelled to Lyndsay to peek at 2 mares that are apparently free to us if we're willing to take them on. Karlie has co workers who board and train them, so we might be able to actually own a horse! If not these, I will absolutely make it a priority to have at least one for her to take care of. She's so amazing with them. They truly love her back as she loves them. It nearly moves me to tears.

So weekend re-cap...Friday was Billy Blasko's birthday, so I went over and hung out with The Stables while they rehearsed, and had a few beers. I got a sneak peek of a brand new tune, and couldn't stop singing it all weekend. Their new record is going to be amazing. Saturday not only did we check out the OTHER stables, but I got to see my brother Dana. He is currently serving time in Lyndsay Correctional Facility for a possession charge. The whole story is too stupid and long to attempt to type, but he's been in since September and should be home for xmas, God willing. He looks great and has such an amazing attitude. I love him a lot and pray he'll be with us soon. Saturday night was Trish Robb's show at JP Fitzpatrick. I can't get over how talented my friends are. Sometimes I feel I'm not worthy, but seeing her and her band up there really made me proud. She will 100% be signed and out of here within a year or so. Sucks for us, but I truly think she will "make it."

On Sunday, I slept in until about 3pm, then got up and found out we had to cancel our rehearsal due to a death in our drummer's family. We support eachother and totally understand this stuff. Instead, Brendan, Sean and I went to Billy's and did some tracking for the disc. We stayed up until the wee hours, drinkin' and cranking the mixes of what will soon be our first actual piece of listenable music. We're all really excited. Billy and I were the last ones up and even tracked a music bed for a new song. I have no idea where it came from, but it's really creepy and 80's influenced. Also, last week when I was sick, I watched CONTROL and Superbad. The Ian Curtis film was horribly depressing, but I loved it. I'm weird like that. Superbad kind of lived up to it's name. A few funny parts but the fat kid says "fuck" way too much, and I can't help but think of George Michael from Arrested Development. What would Jason Bateman's character think of his son getting wasted and trying to bang chicks?

Friday we leave for the cottage. I cannot effing wait. This is my favorite time of the year...the snow falls, and people go away from places like Wasaga Beach. We head in, set up instruments and play for 3 straight days. Sometimes life's alright! Back tomorrow...longest post ever!

Hey dudes. I finally got that effing cold that everyone else has or had. Yep, I thought I was a tough guy and that I could just ignore it and do my regular party schedule this past weekend but it caught up with me and kicked me in the junk. I'm only on here because I hopped into the shower and cleaned up my act so I could host my New Rock @ 9 tonight. I'll have some updates later, but I'm also hosting the Morning After Show all week, which means I get up at 4am, then sleep all day. The past weekend was great, and the show at The Velvet Elvis was one of my fav shows thus far. Lots of people came out, and both The Idlers and The Discounts (surprise guests) were both great. I'll get some pics up soon enough. As for now, I'm going to fake it through this show and do my best to make it back to bed. Achoo.

Friday Night's Alright....

I missed a post yesterday, but you all survived. Just a quick note that this friday night, we're opening for The Idlers who are on a national tour right now. We have a couple new songs ready to try out, and we've been idle ourselves for the last little while, so it'll be fun to play at The Elvis again. As far as the whole album thing goes, I was at Aaron's on monday and we're just about ready to send this thing away for mastering. I'm not going to say when, but when it's done, it's done, then we can move on and try out other fun things. Something I am looking forward to is our first cottage session of the year. This time we have a new cast of characters coming up to try making some noise in Wasaga, and hopefully returning with something to listen to. Each winter, I head up to Karlie's Grandfather's cottage because there's nobody there. We get there, set up and rock for basically 2 days straight. That's how this whole band started really, so it should be fun. Shitty thing is that The Stables won't be joining us, but we do have Joel, Kyle, Brendan, Craig and Sean heading up on Nov. 30th. Cannot wait. Anyhow, please come out and see us on friday. Should be a good night. We'll be on at ten.

The Best Weekend EVER....

Wow. I'm almost worried about writing this post because there's so much to include, but I'll do my best. Friday night was the Band Of Horses show. I had so much to do at work and this was an early show, but my boss was cool enough to help me finish up my duties and hit the highway on time to catch the openers. The Drones kicked off at 6:30. They were truly wicked, and very punk inspired. Think My Bloody Valentine meets The Sex Pistols. I was glad to see them. At 7:30 The Horses hit the stage and began the show by tell us that everyone in the band was very sick. You couldn't tell, because Ben sounded the best I've ever heard them, and I've seen them 3 times now. After the show, 3 carloads of friends came back to Karlie's and we partied until about noon the next day. Sean, Kyle and I wrapped up that party by drinking coffee and baily's in the hotub like real weirdos. The neighbours must've loved us. Aw well, that was just an amazing night.

By the time I finally slept and woke up at 5pm, I was feeling pretty rough, but Brendan and I knew we had plans to see Caribou, and I didn't want to miss it. Thank God I went, because no word of a lie, it was the best show I've EVER been to. We arrived on time to catch Born Ruffians, who are a wicked Toronto act, but I had no idea what to expect for Caribou. We had enough time to grab a couple tall cans and get right up front, and that was the best spot to be at the Opera House that night. There was a DJ spinning on the stage before they came on, and he was cut off by the booming sound of 2 drummers at the front of the stage. Dan Snaith of Caribou doubles as a drummer and multi-instrumentlist too. It was the loudest start to a show yet. Move over Mogwai, because I now have a new favorite live act. I only knew about 4 songs, but it didn't matter. The light and video show that went along with the music had me in such a trance that I just started laughing. I can't understand how someone like me who loves music and concerts so much, has never seen this band live. Best show ever.

Ok, I'm done for now. Lot's to do, but tomorrow I'll post the interview with Dan, and some other fun stuff that's on the way!

Well tonight is the big night. Shitty thing is that the Phoenix Concert Theatre turns into a disco at like 10pm, meaning the show starts at 7pm sharp. Regardless, I am ready to rock. Nope, I haven't even seen this film yet, but today I found myself completely wrapped up in the life of Ian Curtis. I've watched the trailer a few times, and youtube'd a few clips of the band playing live, and re-discovered what I love about Joy Division. In the film, each actor actually learned their instrument and Sam Riley does a pretty decent job at portraying Curtis' barrotone brilliance. I have to drive into Toronto to see it, as it's just "cool" enough to come to the surrounding theatres. What a joke.

Anyhow, not much to report today. It's snowing as I type this, and I'm really excited about the weekend. Going to see a couple of concerts, having a party at Karlie's afterwards, and not working. Sounds just fine to me. Today I offer a Joy Division album.

Could it be? Another brand new My Bloody Valentine album next year? Apparently so! Reading pitchfork as I do about every hour, paid off for fans of the shoegaze hall of famers today. The follwing is a direct copy and paste from the site:

Yeah, wow did it ever get cold quick! A real rainy, windy mess out there today, but I have some fun things to look forward to. Unfortunately I found out today that the Band Of Horses show on friday at The Phoenix starts at 7pm sharp! Insane, however my cool as a cucumber program director has allowed me to switch shifts on friday so I can still go. That would've sucked and HARD. The next night, Brendan and I are going to see Caribou. I'm excited because I just started listening to his new album called Andorra, and it's really great. So, from tonight until friday, I shall listen to the 4 other albums so I'm ready to rock! I'm also interviewing the lead singer Dan Snaith too. Should be cool.

Wow. Today is monday and I can't help but feel kind of shitty after such an amazing weekend. Brendan's party was absolutley the best time I've had in years. Our band played at around 11:15 in the main floor of the house, and it was a lot of fun. The sound was shitty, and Joel had never played before, but we held it together for about 7 or 8 songs. Good times for the Heartache. Then the Stables set up and rocked it as usual for about an hour and a half. The crowd was so great and the whole party was positive. No fighting, no drama, just a lot of medication and smiles. My fav part of the night was the DJ's. Steve De Taeye is so rad. He always mixes up the good indie rock with some crazy shit I never know. He was spinning in between bands and kicked off the rest of the night. Brendan then took over and totally blew my mind. That was my fav part of the night because he introduced me to music I just never get to hear. It was truly magical. Karlie had left by the time the DJ's really started, but I just hung my head and closed my eyes and loved every beat. I got to take over for 40 mins or so...my playlist was more dancey rock with LCD, Radiohead, Animal Collective and other fun stuff, but man it was such a good night. We hung around the fire and laughed our asses off until about 1pm the next day. I made a complete fool of myself but didn't really intend to be in the spotlight. It just so happened that I get really giggly after drinking for that long, and I sort of lost my head...sorry to all those who were at the butt-end of my jokes. I love ya! Thanks to everyone who came out and rocked it. This was truly a fantastic party. Looking forward to next weekend as Band Of Horses are playing...that should be intresting!

No clue who those old bags are, but I thought it was funny. Yep, today is friday and I'm really looking forward to tomorrow. Our guitar player Brendan is having a private party for 200 of his closest friends, and we're playing a set, then dancing until the sun comes up. I'm spinning a set too which I'm really excited for. I've set up a list of songs that should have at least 2 people doing the running man. That's right, the running man. Other than that, I'm just glad this week is over. It's been up and down, but I'm loving this whole no work on the weekend thing. Nothing else to report other than I won't be here until Monday. Today is November 1st. Anyone else wondering what happened to the summer? Yes, I know we've been spoiled like crazy with the weather, but it's just the simple fact that the older you get, the faster time goes by. Last night, I hung out with my friend Shane, and handed out some candy to the trick or treaters, or as one 2 yr old would say..."tick or teet." Ah to be young and innocent again. I'm having a day today. Just a blah, going through the motions type of thursday. Happy Halloween everyone! This used to be the biggest day of the year for me as a kid. I used to know my costume by the end of August, but ironically I'm going to a party on Saturday and still don't know what I'll be. I wanted to be a big furry animal like a bear or something, and tried one suit on and started to sweat like a whore in church, so I think I'll just go with a wig and fake beard and go as a bum. I guess I won't have to do much will I? Brendan and I went to the rehearsal spot and made some noise until about 2 am last night. I've got some cool ideas and thanks to my loop pedals, I think we're going to get this new project up and running pretty soon. As for tonight, I've made a specifically spooky playlist on my ipod, and I'm going to light some candles, roll one up and scare myself silly. Also, I highly recommend listening to my New Rock @ 9 show tonight! I've made a really cool playlist, and there's a few treats in there for the witches in flight.

The Beat Goes On...

So as promised I came back! Wow two days in a row, and I'm pretty sure nobody has even been here, but as I stated, it helps time pass at work. Last night I went over to my buddy Pete's place, as we've been talking about jamming for a while now. I didn't think it would really go anywhere, but as it turns out, Pete has an old 4 track unit with an old Roland drum machine. Now anyone who knows me, understands that regardless of my capacity of playing music, I LOVE to record. He kind of talked down the fact that it's an older set up, but I got a huge kick out of seeing someone else similar tactics to track your own stuff. We sat and listened to a bunch of his old cassettes and I was totally blown away. I'm now inspired to go back to the older unit I have and try to look at this from a different angle. Thanks Pete. Look out Bob Pollard!

Someone else I've been listening to and learning from is one Bradford Cox. He's the front man of a band called Deerhunter and I'm pretty sure he's one of the most prolific artists in music today. Not only does his band actively play and release albums, but he's also doing another project called Atlas Sound. He's just wrapped up an album under that name, but if you click the Deerhunter link up there, it'll take you to his blog where he basically tracks and uploads a song each day. It's really out there, and it's trippy, loopy stuff, but I burned a disc with all of his songs from his blog, and I'm excited about doing something different again. My band The Champion Heartache is great, and I love writing and recording original pop rock songs, but I feel I need another outlet. Something that is completely different than what we're doing, and really fucked up. So I think I'm going to start playing with the sequencer I have on rent, and get started on a side project. I still don't know where to start, but tonight after work, I'm going to make my way over to our rehearsal space and make some noise. I need a medium upon which I'll actually record the music, but I like the thought of recording songs and uploading them here for you to listen to. Hell, maybe I'll bang out a quick EP and call it something weird. Who knows. Bottom line...I've been inspired!

On another note, I'm spinning a set at Brendan's party this saturday which is amazing. I haven't DJ'd in a while, so I'm hellbent on selecting some creepy, dancey music for Halloween. The Heartache is playing a set that night too, and we've just added some new dates for the next couple months too. We're playing on Nov.16th and Dec.21st at The Velvet Elvis.

Holy Shit...It's been a year!

No idea whyI decided to come back here. I've been reading blogs from different bands latley and thought I should get back to dog-fucking at work and write some pointless entries. So, in the past little while (or year) our band has re-shaped, re-formed, re-bounded and re-corded some new songs that will be available very soon. This stuff takes so long, but I'm thankful that I have such amazing people behind me to help make this possible. The Champion Heartache's first album has literally taken a year to record. We're now in the mixing phase and it will be mastered and ready to go for January. In the meantime, we've been jamming on sundays and we've got about 5 newer songs that will be on the next album. We're adding them to the live set gradually and even pounded out a new one last night too. I promised myself I was going to take some time off to gather my head and write some new stuff, but instead we're going to continue to jam, and play the occasional show. One being on November 16th at The Velvet Elvis. We're opening for St.John's reggae rockers "The Idlers." This upcoming saturday is Brendan's Halloween party. No clue on what I'll dress up as, but we're playing a set with our dear friend Joel Phair behind the kit, as Terry Toutant has another gig with one of his other bands. I think he's got 3 or 4 on the go now. Good for you dude. Oh, and it's his birthday tomorrow too, so sing the song for him. On friday I went to see Rogue Wave. I went alone to The Mod Club and I was selfishly excited to see the lack of attendence. Why? So I could walk to and from the stage with nothing to worry about. They're so amazing live, and Zach Rogue's voice is better live than on CD. Hell I bought a t-shirt! Next show is Nov. 9th as Band Of Horses are playing at The Phoenix, and the next night, Caribou are in town too. That'll be awesome too. Autumn always rocks for concerts in T.O

So much for me keeping up to date on here huh? Well, it's about 8am saturday morning and I can hardly stay awake. The Champion Heartache played to a noisy room on College downtown last night. We sucked, the room was dead and there was no sound guy. The night was topped off by us making a whopping $25.00 which in all reality is a bonus, but the rain came down all night, the headliner was tone deaf and the 10 people in the bar didn't really even clap after each song. Comes with the territory. In all seriousness, we played pretty horribly and I just want to forget about it. They say you take the good with the bad etc...we were the bad!

Nothing much to report recording wise. Kyle, Aaron and I hit up the Cobra Headquarters for another session on weds, but not much came out of it. We have 3 songs completely done, but last weds was lacking creativity for some reason. We're going to track some drums and stuff on thursday in hope of getting something rockier on the cd. I'll post a song perhaps next week.

For now, time to re-heat the coffee and act like I give a shit. Wish me luck radioland!

A Fond Farewell

Today is the day that Elliott Smith took his own life 3 years ago. I know I haven't posted in a few days, and this might be somewhat of a depressing blog, but this day means a lot to me. Elliott was the one artist that made music real for me again. From the moment my friend Jay played me "Either/Or" , I was instantly a fan. I was also fortunate enough to see Elliott play three times in concert. Hell, we drove from London to Washington DC to see him play. I always regretted not talking to him, or attemping to thank him, but it doesn't matter. He's gone now, and it was super tough for me to get my brain around it for a long time, but after three years it still sends chills up my spine to hear his music.

We're holding a memorial show for Elliott and his fans tonight at The Blue Moon in Toronto. There's a lot of people coming out for this, and we'll be playing Elliott covers all night, so if you're in the city, please come by.

In other news, my good friend Joe King and his girlfriend are expecting a baby! I just found out laast night while I was at the Arms for Stu's DVD release party. Congrats to both Joe and Stu. Everyday is Like Sunday....

So no post yesterday. I was far too tired at work and really didn't care to type about my hangover. Thursday was so amazing. I sat with Edward from Grizzly Bear and we did an interview for The New Rock @ 9. He was very kind and allowed me ramble on about anything that came to mind. It was very casual, yet cool to sit and talk with someone I admire so much. After our interview, he told us we could add someone to our guest list only to call me back on my cell phone to tell me it wasn't approved and we couldn't! Funny thing was that I tried to get 4 of my friends to come, and they all turned me down! Thank Fuck!

The show was amazing, although I must say that Grizzly Bear's set was the highlight for me. Not only do they pull of 4 part harmonies, but they're set was really loud and intense as opposed to what one might think after first listen to their latest album, Yellow House. Don't get me wrong, their softer, more delicate songs translated just beautifully, but their drummer is just amazing, and had a way of kicking the songs into new a direction when played live. He even sings too, which blew me away. I could easily sit here and ramble for an hour or so about this band, but I won't. All I will say is, please go and see them. At least buy the record, it's wonderful.

TV on The Radio's album Return To Cookie Mountain is amazing, but live it just didn't do it for me. I love the frontman Tunde's energy and they sounded fine, but it's NOT what it sounds like on CD. It's more in your face punk rock as opposed to the slick production on the album. My opinion only, so no worries.

After the show, we hit the Undeground with Grant, Rusty and Ozzy. Grant ended up paying $40 to get us in so we didn't have to wait int he cold. He also let Karlie and I pass out in his bed too (without him in it). Karlie thought she could keep up with the boys that night. Nice try baby, but maybe next time I won't get you 2 drinks each time I go to the bar. Rusty and I ended up staying up until about 6 a.m. Once again, this was a great time and I can't wait until the next show.

Last night our band played in the middle of nowhere in an unheated garage at a small festival called Foxstock. We were by far the most mellow act there. Other bands that played were The Boxheads, The Flying Tigers, The Micronite Filters, Planet Uranus, and then us The Champion Heartache. Although every other band was totally rocking out, our set was very mellow with just piano and acoustics. Thank god the kids were so cool because I really thought we were going to get bottled. Nope. Turns out some of them loved Iron and Wine because we covered one of their songs, plus about 7 originals and they seemed to really dig it. Thanks to all who came out. On that note, Aaron and I are just about finished 3 songs completely. Our last session at Cobra Headquarters went amazing and we finished harmonies to track number 2 titled "For A Little While" because the chorus says "I promise we'll be fine if we stay high for a little while." Pretty deep huh? It totally sounds amazing to me anyhow. The third track is a poppy piano rocker that is gunna smoke. I can't wait to lay vocals on it on wednesday night. I'll post one in a week or so when I feel ready to. At this rate our album might be ready for January.

Wolf Like Me...

So obviously I'm feeling much better today. The rain is falling, the temperature is cold and I'm stuck at work, but I'm quite content tonight. Today, our cover band got together and learned like 6 new tunes, which puts us at about 30 songs. We're even doing a GBV song, "Chasing Heather Crazy" and it sounds great. I'm not singing it, so maybe that's why. After that, I got my mop chopped and then hit home to pack up for tonight's recording session with Aaron. Tonight's beer of choice - Laker Honey Brown. Yep. Fucking Gross, but cheap and cold.
I also had dinner with Kar's family whcih is the best part of us living back at home. Dinners rock everynight!

Tomorrow night I'm doing my Grizzly Bear interview before the show starts at The Opera House. Those dudes up there are headlining. TV On The Radio have put out an amazing album titled "Return To Cookie Mountain" and I'm really excited to see them play. We're hooking up with Anita and her boyfriend, as they're big fans too, and then possibly out for drinks afterwards too. I only hope I'm up for it, as these wednesday recording sessions tend to stretch me out a bit. Worth it though, totally.

Feeling Sorry For Myself...

I've had one of those days where I feel like shit and don't know why. It's funny how quick guys are to judge women over their "time of the month" when in fact we get it too, only mine comes once a week! Poor Karlie. Maybe it's post turkey depression, or the fact that I feel like everyday is exactly the same, but I've been in a bad mood and just don't know why.

SO...today's post is about those days where it just feels good to feel bad! Modest Mouse pushed their new album back to 2007. The disc, titled We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, has been moved from a previously announced December 19th arrival to sometime early next year. No immediate reason was given for the delay. In the meantime, the group will play a series of concert dates next month, including four in the Los Angeles area, five in New York and one in Miami. No dates around here yet.

This is how I feel today. I only had a few pints of Guinness, but when you don't drink for a while, a few can do just this to you....well, me but you know what I mean.

I had to be at work for noon today, and woke up with 20 minutes to get here. I didn't even have time to grab a coffee. Poor me.

Tonight I'm having the final dinner of the weekend at Kar's parents place. It's her sisters birthday too, so afterwards we'll be buying her first legal drink. I'm more excited than she is I think.

I'm also being interviewed by Oshawa This Week tonight at The Velvet Elvis. A writer got in touch with me via email and requested that we talk about my radio show and my band too. This is the first time this has happened in 3 years of being on The Rock, so I'm quite pleased. After the interview I'm going to play a few songs at the open mic too, so that'll be fun.

Tomorrow's post may have something more exciting. Turkey sandwiches possibly?

Right now it's about 3:30 am. So it's technically Sunday, but once I get to work at 11 am I'll write another post from work. Right away, you're thinking, "what the fuck is with the guy with the gun in his mouth?" Well, I'll tell you. Tonight we had dinner number 2 at my dad's, which was amazing. Roast Beef, and the fixin's with lots of wine and other treats. After dinner I called around to see who was going out for post dinner pints. The Arms was once again the place to be. As usual, there were tables of 18 yr olds, a few old perverts at the bar, and......another table of my best friends playing poker. We settled in, played 2 games...(which Karlie both won) and then got ready to leave. It was great to see the boys again, but it came to my attention that some of my friends actually read this fucked up little page...SO....thank you to Conway, Blake, Ozzy, Wells and whoever else made a comment about it. I felt like such a douche because on my list of things to be thankful for, I forgot my dear friends Jay and Amy's engagement. I mean, I love them both so much and totally forgot to say anything about it, so Jay and Amy I'm sorry. I won't DJ your wedding, but I sure hope I'm drunk at the reception.

Now, to the picture above. One of my dearest friends Grant, who I admire to the fullest, for some reason, told me to go home and shoot myself. I still love him, but when I won a poker hand, I said to him "shit G, sorry...whattya want me to do?" ...he responded with "Go home and shoot yourself." Well, I can't do that because I don't have a firearm, but I will say this...you're a heartless bastard, and I think I might think about buying a gun very soon. By the way, Karlie won 180.00 off of these guys, but they still talk nice to her.

It's Sunday today, and I must say that yesterday's Turkey Dinner completely rocked. One down, 2 to go! Thanks Mom.

These dudes up there, also rock. They're a band from Brooklyn NY called Grizzly Bear and they're headed to The Opera House this Thursday to open for TV On The Radio. This is one of my most highly anticipated shows of the year. Not only is "Return To Cookie Mountain" one of my fav's of the year, but Grizzly Bear's "Yellow House" is a mix of dream drenched, ghost - rock that will leave you confused, and craving more. I really wasn't sure what to think at first listen because there's so much going on, but after 20 or so spins of their disc, I'm convinced this will make my top 10 list too.

Why am I writing about them today? Well I just received an email stating I will be meeting them after sound check to do a sit down interview for my New Rock @ 9 Radio Program. Very excited indeed.

"Gobble Gobble Bitches!"

Ahhh it's that weekend again. The weekend that means a lot of booze, a lot of food, and a lot of Tryptophan. Tryptophan is a component of many plant and animal proteins, and a normal part of the diet that humans must get from outside sources. It is a precursor for serotonin from which our brains make serotonin, which is then used to calm you down and make you sleepy. In other words, I drink a beer or two, eat a plate or two, then I sleep an hour or two. It happens every year, and I have no problem with it. Hell, this year I get to do this 3 times! My feeding frenzy looks like this:

Saturday - Turkey Dinner at my Mom's with my Sister Amy, her husband Graham, my Mom, and Karlie.

Sunday - Ham / Turkey with my Dad, his wife Heather, and others.

Monday - Kar's Mom and Dad's which is also her sister Natasha's birthday. This means all of the above AND a freaking birthday cake. God help us now.

So in tradition of this hoilday, I thought I'd write out a short yet sincere list of things I'm thankful for this year. I guess I'm already known to my friends as the cheeseball anyhow, so why not?

#5 - Living at home again. It's been so cool to be back in the neighbourhood I grew up in. This is my fav time of year, and walking the dog on the same route I did 10 years ago is somewhat surreal, but great too. My Dad is allowing me to live rent free, and he's allowed me to turn the basement into my own little apartment. At first it was pretty odd, but I'm quickly feeling more at home each day. Karlie's parents have let us do the same at their place too. We have very supportive parents.

#4 - My Job. I know I'm the kind of guy who bitches about working weekends, but in all honesty, I really love working in radio. This is a cushy, laid back job where I'm paid to surf the net, and talk about music. No one likes to get up at 6am on Saturday, but it could be worse, and I lose sight of that sometimes. If I ever leave here, it'll be hard. I'm thankful I'm not in an assembly line somewhere.

#3 - My Mom / Sister. Ya I'll get whipped for this one, but my Mom is has been through a lot of shit in the past year, yet she manages to maintain a positive attitude in all she does. She's gained her independence back, lost a bunch of weight, moved into a new apartment and seems to be really happy. 10 years ago I never would have thought she could live this way again, but that's my Mom for you...always full of surprises. She truly is the strongest person I know.

Also, my sister met a great guy and they were married this past summer. She's so great for him and he's great for her. He puts up with her shit, and she laughs her ass off at his excentricities. No, seriously...they both rock. The true reflection of a relationship that works and always will.

#2 - My Friends. This past year I've seen quite a few of my best friends either get married, engaged, have children, or make big career moves. I 've some how managed to ween out the idiots in my life, and I'm now surrounded by amazing people. Kar and I babysat Jo and Aaron's little dude Noah last night, and I couldn't believe I was staring at the seed of Monty. Kurt also finally married Carly this year, Cal popped the question to Claire, Saul cleaned up his act big time, and Jay Price landed a great job a few years back and is still proving his move to Kincardine was a the right choice. Rusty and Nash got a sweet condo in Toronto and they both have Girlfriends! Stu made another movie, Jordy is back in school, Colin is a medic, and Peter is still making television shows on the road. McCarten stays up with me until 8am partying and still keeps his job! Seriously, what a great group of people I have as friends. So proud to have them in my life.

#1 - Karlie. Yeah, you knew it was coming. This past year Kar lost her Grandma, her apartment, got laid off of her job, and had to live with me everyday. She is so amazing. She never complains about paying more for things, cleaning up after me or allowing me to spend time playing music. She supports everything I do, and never says a word. She deserves so much more but for some reason, she's content to stay by my side. I'm very thankful to have her. Also, she's reeeeally hot, and I can't keep my hands off of her. Any of my guy friends barf yet? Aw well, deal with it. When you've got it this good, you talk about it. Love you Kar!

So there....that's my list of reasons that I'm thankful this year. Sure it's corny, but that's just me.

Game Onnnn....

I found this diagram rather useful, as we all will this season I'm sure. Tonight marks the home opener, and I'm sure you all have your teams picked etc.

You see, my sick friends feel the need to bet on just about everything in life. The NHL season means endless discussions on trades, deals, and other fantasy hockey terms that I don't know, or care about for that matter. It happens every year for about 5 months. We meet for pints, I sit in the corner at the pub and nod my head as to say "Yes Ray, that would be a great deal for Peca." Like a I know what the fuck you're talking about? Nope.

I do enjoy Leaf hockey, but that's about it. So this post is to signify the kick off to a long NHL season, and more money lost from the pockets of my twisted franchise of friends.

At 12 midnight, I'll be heading into the Studio to try to wrap up 2 songs with Aaron. I'm getting really excited about this stuff. It's weird because of the hours we record at, but at the same time, it's great to have someone else willing to work at these hours. We drink a lot of beer, smoke a lot of pot amongst other things, and have fun making noise until the birds outside drown us out. I'll keep you updated on how this stuff is going.

Red Hot and Ready To Rock!

Long time no post....try about 5 months!

Shit has been CRAZY lately. We're now moved out of our apartment and living in between Kar's parents home and my dad's too. Thank god they're both just around the corner from each other. This now means the following:

- Home Cooked Meals
- Smoking Pot OUTSIDE Only
- Music Levels Turned Down
- Panic Attacks For The Bunny

Seriously though, this was a good move for us. We need to save money for a year so we can move into our own home, and I know it's going to be tough, but it's a smart move.

Since I last posted, I've been to a slew of great concerts and met a bunch of fantastic people. This summer was also great because I got out and played a bunch of acoustic shows of my own with The Champion Heartache. We have some more lined up for october too, so check www.myspace.com/matthewholtby for details.

I've also started recording with my good friend Aaron Blasko at his apartment studios we've dubbed "Cobra Headquarters" because of the huge carpet with a picture of a snake on it that hangs within it's walls. Sessions are going great, and they usually start at midnight and go until 8am. At this rate I should have at least an EP in the can by December. That's the plan anyhow, so please buy it when it's ready.

Last week, Chad Smith swung by the Studios for an interview. He's the coolest guest I've had thus far, and the only Station he visited was The Rock. Thanks dude.

Well, I'm going to try to get back at blogging at least 3 times a week, so if you actually check this page, please email me and let me know that you're reading it again.

Sweet moses, look at how wasted we got the other night after Mogwai. Wow, what an amazing night. The show was awesome and the bar we hit called the "Underground" was just as fun. The rest of the boys went out after hours, while Karlie carried me back to Rusty's apartment.

Thee Dumbest Post Ever....

Kar and I got new cell phones today, which ironically is the best I could come up with for the blog. We waited for like 15 mins to even talk to anyone, and when we did we got roped into going on the "couples plan" and we each have our own phone now. Awesome huh. Come bill time, we'll see how awesome it is.

Things with my company Mint Management are really starting to pick up. I landed some cool gigs for 2 of the bands I'm working with, and it truly makes me feel awesome to help them out. As a plug, check out www.performerz.ca and say hi. These guys helped me out big time.

I'm in the midst of setting up the Podcast at www.redransom.com and it should be online as of midnite tonight.

Wow, it's been a while hasn't it? I went on a huge break because I'm doing this other blog about my progress at the gym....http://www.therock.fm (click the beer gut on the home page.) My company is paying for my trainer and gym membership, so I kinda have to use it and write about it. However, that shouldn't stop me from entertaining the 2 of you who read this blog, so I'm back baby!

Mogwai play the Phoenix this Tuesday and I'm going to be interviewing them at the venue around 3 o'clock. Afterwards I'll meet up with Pete and Rusty and get weird. Cannot wait.

Since my last post, I've done interviews with Nick from Death Cab and that guy up there. He's Jason Lytle from Grandaddy and they're put out their final album, called "Just Like The Fambly Cat." It's a beautiful album and I really encourage you to get it. If you want a copy of the interview special, email me and I'll send one to you. As for the album, it's their last. The band is officially broken up and this is the good bye album, sigh.

One Tired Puppy...

I'm so horrible at updates. Since the last entry, I've seen the Flaming Lips, golfed twice, downed a shitload of Heineken, and caught up on my sleep. This morning was tough to get going again as I actually had 2 days off after the morning show run. After this shift, I have to drive to Toronto to jam with my friend Craig's band. By the time I get back to the "Shwa" I shall be zombified.

I get a few more days off this week too, so I think I'm going to head to the cottage for a few days. Watching the Masters inspires me to get out and golf more, so that I shall. I've already played 5 rounds, and got my first birdie last week. I hit the pin on the 3rd hole at Stonehenge with Karlie's Dad standing by. Big points there. In fact on the 4th, he offered to let me hit with his G2 driver. I smiled and declined. Like I need that on my conscience!

All in all, I guess things are cool for now. I miss my friends like crazy. It feels like I haven't seen Ray and the gang for months. This week I'm dedicating one night to the pub, no excuses.

Oh, and to finish...that Built To Spill show has been cancelled. I hope our trip is still on though...details to come.

Flaming Lips...

I Love You But...

Another quick report, as I've been up since 4am. I got my Flaming Lips tickets today thanks to Ken at Warner Music. The show is next Tuesday which coincides with my final morning show shift, which means as of 9am next Tuesday I am a free bird for a few days. I shall party, and I shall party hard.

I golfed with my friend Aaron Blasko yesterday. Words can't describe how good it felt to be outdoors doing something active. It's been a while. Just ask my love handles. On that note, when I was golfing I got a call from a sales rep at work telling me I've landed a small endorsement deal with Roo's Gym & Sports Center. What does that mean? Well, I'll find out details on Monday, but apparently they're going to create some promotion around getting "The Diamond Out Of The Rough Shape He's In..." My idea of course, cough cough. It's the perfect time to try something like this though as I know I put on at least 15 lbs this winter. I'll work with a trainer for a little while, and go at least 3 times a week to try to look like my best this summer. All of my friends look like they could be on the O.C, meanwhile my third chin could have a show all it's own. Sure, I'll give the gym a shot.

Hmmmm, nothing else to really mention. I'll be in Toronto at the Degrassi House on Saturday playing another solo show. I have no idea what to expect, but I hope it goes well. I'll be booking some shows in Oshawa in April too with my new band The Champion Heartache, so I want everyone to come out to that show too. Thanks to Ozzy, Cal, Carvey, Stu, and anyone else who came out last week. I had fun.

Looking For The Good Stuff?

If I'm not keeping up to date as I should this week, it's because my entire sleep schedule is flipped upside down. This morning show routine is for the birds, literally. I wanted to quickly do a write up on a few cool artists I've been listening to lately.

First up, Band Of Horses. Signed to Sub-Pop, and very laid back stuff, although some of the rockier numbers on their debut CD remind me of Crazy Horse era Neil Young. That's supposed to be a good thing by the way. Think My Morning Jacket meets The Shins. Damn fine material.

Secondly, Grizzley Bear. This 4 piece from Brooklyn New York made their latest CD on a 4 track in their bedroom, and sounds pretty much like that too. Maybe it's the GBV in me, but I totally love the lo-fi approach. It's what I do at home too, so when someone actually gets positive attention from the DIY approach, it makes me smile. This CD is awesome. Can't wait to see them next week at the Drake Hotel.

Finally, Neko Case just released "Fox Confessor Brings The Flood." I love the New Pornographers, and I love Neko Case too. This album is sad but happy. It's loud, but quiet. It's a cross between the earlier days of the NP only now she shines with her Patsy Cline-esque sombre tones, only to be backed by The Sadies. I love it. You might not.

The Long Drive From Montreal...

Hope everyone had a blast in Montreal. How much money did you blow?I've been super lazy and behind on my blogs lately, but I promise this week will be full of eventful posts. I'm actually stuck doing the "Morning Show" all week, plus 3 days next week too. This means I must wake up at approx. 4 am each morning, and head to work where I'm supposed to act like I love the mornings. What could I possibly hate more than mornings? My co-host isn't all that bad, it's just the fact that I'll be getting up when I usually go to sleep. Aw well.

Last thursday I played my first solo opener at the Elvis. It felt great and I can't wait to play in Toronto this upcoming saturday. If you're around, I'll be at Degrassi House, just across from The Opera House.

Other than that, I'm really not sure what else to comment on other than the fact I need a vacation. Yeah, I know my job isn't tough, but no matter what you do, you still need a break from it. Give me sun, give me warmth, and give me golf.

I'm looking forward to the end of April as I'll be seeing Built to Spill in Vermont, but that really isn't a vacation. A road trip with the boys is long overdue though. Talk tomorrow.

Don't Look Back In Anger...

Oasis was in town Monday. Some people love them, others hate them. They remind me too much of the other Gallagher brothers who we all know. If you don't know them, it's okay. Monty had a baby. His name is Noah. Oasis has a baby too. His name is Noel. Weird huh? Hope you had fun at the show. I played some on my show in honor of the biggest dick heads in rock music. I do like them, honest. Love you Monts.

After my show Monday I drove up to my friend Joel's place in Myrtle and jammed with him, and Aaron Blasko until about 7am. Joel went to bed at 6am. What a bitch. Blasko however, drank with me until the sun came up and played me an acoustic set that sounded prettier than the birds outside. Some people don't know how talented they really are.

Happy St. Patty's Day indeed. I couldn't even enjoy numerous green beverages as I should have, due to the fact that I have to be up at 6am every saturday morning. Aw well. At the Groove Lounge last night Emphatic played a headline set, which was great as usual, however, the opener "Women and Children" totally blew the roof off the place. A 3 piece band, having only three shows under their belt and totally unlike anything I've heard in a while . Keep it up guys.

Ya know that cold that's going around? I got it and kicked it's ass in a day. That day happened to be my only day off, but I took care of it.

Tonight is the Poor Pelly and The Kent Boys show in Orono, so I shall get revenge on my liver then. This past Thursday night I saw Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins at The Opera House. It was truly beautiful, and her set is better live than on CD, but go get it anyhow. Oh yeah, she's about 4 ft tall too....no lie. Smallest rock star I've ever seen. Very inspiring.

I also found out this morning that the Darlington newspaper did a piece on this upsoming thursday's show at the Elvis featuring Barzin, Jonas and Matt Holtbuy.

If you know me, then this is funny. If you don't, just trust me...it is.

Surf's Up...

This past saturday I took Karlie and her sister Natasha to come with me to interview Matthew Caws of Nada Surf.

Remember Nada Surf? Well, they played Lee's Palace saturday and their new album is amazing. Hell, it's not even NEW, as in that it came out about 6 months ago. Either way, he was really cool and we talked for about an hour. The band even played a 3 song set for just us during sound check. This job might pay peanuts, but stuff like this makes it all worth while.

Other than that, the weekend was slow. Kicked Joel's ass up and down in poker last night, but what else is new? I'm joking of course....right?

Sigh,

It's Saturday morning. My head still hurts from my system competing with the bar one floor beneath me where I spin every friday. People are insane. I host "New Rock Fridays" at the Groove Lounge, playing alternative and indie rock. How some people are so daft as to ask me to play Reggae, then get mad when I tell them no. "Have you heard any rap or reggae up here tonight?" When Interpol is cranked and you come up to the booth to request Jay-Z, you're lucky I don't hit the trap door button.

My Morning Pearl Jam...

What the? Is this for real? Yes it is very real. Just announced today, the first string of PJ dates and one of my fav bands are opening up. This leaves me with the question of whether I could go to this show, rock out with My Morning Jacket and then actually be drunk enough to withstand 2 hours with Pearl Jam. Don't get me wrong, they're a good band and we all grew up singing "Jeremy" but I haven't liked a thing they've done since Vitology. It's still kick-ass to see a huge band taking these guys along. I'm sure it has to due with the label. MMJ is signed to Dave Matthew's label afterall. Yeah, I don't see the connection either. Whatever.

Tonight on the show, I'll spin that new PJ single, as it leaked a day early and I have it, plus some MMJ as a side dish. I have the new Richard Ashcroft single (thanks Vanessa) too, and I'll try to slide that in.

Mogwai's new record hit stores today. It's really good, but as usual www.pitchforkmedia.com gave them a bad review. No surprises there, they always poop on good albums. I think it's really good. It's not as good as "Rock Action", or "Come On Die Young", but then again what is? Trust me go get it. It's called "Mr. Beast" and it's really moody, stoner, instrumental bliss. Some people have compared it to "Loveless" by My Bloody Valentine, which is a stretch but it's good regardless.

Nothing else has really changed since my bitter post yesterday. Some good local shows on the way, but I'll direct you to my new fav site for that...
